Photo Contest!

I’m looking for high-quality photos of pieces of writing in endangered alphabets to include in my upcoming book, Writing Beyond Writing: Voyages Among Endangered Alphabets.

The three best submissions will each win $100, and will be published in the book along with credit for the photographer.

Rules:

  1. The photo must be high resolution, at least 4MB in file size.
  2. The photo must show some text in a minority script within its context or setting (such as a sign, a piece of art, a newspaper, a document, a book, or in a classroom) rather than just a print-out of a font.
  3. The photo must be accompanied by a caption explaining (a) who took the photo, (b) where and when it was taken, (c) how it would be pronounced, and (d) what the piece of text means in English.
  4. The photo may not be taken from another source such as an online site or document.
  5. In general, the term “endangered alphabets” means scripts included in our Atlas of Endangered Alphabets at endangeredalphabets.net. If you want to send me a photo of a script that is not included in the Atlas but you think is endangered or new and emerging, check with me by email at tim@endangeredalphabets.com.
  6. Submit as many entries as you like, by email, as attachments, to tim@endangeredalphabets.com.
  7. Deadline is January 1, 2023. Winners, who will chosen by the executive director and art director of the Endangered Alphabets Project, will be notified by January 15, 2023.
